Field Trip to Highlands Hammock State Park

The first PRAS field trip of the 2015-2016 season will be on Saturday, October 17, to Highlands Hammock State Park, near Sebring. Because of its beauty and old growth trees Highlands Hammock became one of the first state parks in Florida. There are nine nature trails to explore. Birding is excellent with a variety of habitats. Migrant warblers often arrive there before being seen in Charlotte County. The Cypress Swamp Boardwalk makes one think of Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary.

Bring binoculars, sun protection, insect repellent, water, walking shoes, and a picnic lunch. An entrance fee is needed for state parks. To carpool meet at 7 am in the parking lot behind the McDonald’s on Peachland Blvd near King’s Highway in Port Charlotte.
